The Book of Common Worship was introduced into regular use in the Church of England in Advent 2000. It marked the culmination of over 25 years of review and revision of Alternative Services.

Common Worship consists of a main service book containing the most frequently used services, supported by other books containing material for particular needs, (such as funerals and marriages).

Common Worship has sought to integrate into one main service book both the traditional, as well as more modern services. (It incorporates Morning and Evening Prayer from the BCP, along with Communion Services in the older language). As such it is borne out of a deliberate attempt to make the traditional more accessible to a new generation, and present the modern as a legitimate part of  the Church of England's inheritance.

A most generous offer was made by the Friends of the Chapel to donate some 400 copies of Common Worship at a total cost of just under £5000. The books have now been purchased and put into general use in the Chapel starting with the Morning Service on the 16th March and Communion on the 23rd March..

To partially offset the substantial sum gifted by the Friends, it will be possible for congregational members to have a service book dedicated and suitably inscribed, either in memory of a loved one, or with personal details. A suggested donation of £10 per book,. (based on the recovery of Income Tax through a gift aid scheme), would be appropriate. More details will follow in due course.
