The Royal Memorial Chapel Sandhurst
Our former Chapel, also dedicated to Christ the King, was transformed from the one time No 2 Lecture Room of Old College - a location at the heart of the Academy. The Chapel was formally opened by His Eminence, the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Griffen, DD on 8th December 1948.
A major reworking of the interior, a new entrance and prominent stairway was successfully completed in November 2004
This unremarkable black and white photograph is a reminder that in the difficult days of 1948 the emerging Royal Military Academy Sandhurst placed a high emphasis on worship at the heart of the officer cadet's life. This was recognised by the Church in no less a person than the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster.
We are blessed with a remarkable series of murals portraying the Way of the Cross which provide a focus for meditation throughout the year as well as their special role in Holy Week. The murals, like the bronze Crucifix over the altar, were the creation of Miss Stella Schmole, who was a member of the ATS Company at Sandhurst at the end of the War. They have been incorporated in the new Chapel with the addition of a final station of the Empty Tomb..
Simplicity, dignity, and tranquillity mark out a piece of "holy ground" in the busy life of the Academy. Less grand but more intimate than the Royal Memorial Chapel it is the home of worship for Catholics in the Sandhurst military community.
