A place to meet
The Church is not a building. The Church is the people who worship Jesus Christ. If we only come into a building, take part in the service and then leave, we have not met as the Church. Such was the reasoning of Padre Peter Denton, when he was Chaplain of the Academy. He looked for somewhere in the Chapel where members of the congregation could meet for refreshments after the morning service. He discovered a scruffy area which had a leaky floor and various intrusions of pipes and other things that made it look rather unpromising. With the help of many people he transformed the area so that it became usable and over subsequent years further improvements have brought it to the excellent facility we enjoy to-day.
It is used on many other occasions for groups of officer cadets, by the choir, by the cadet Bible study fellowship, the Guild of St Helena and others. If you attend a service at the Royal Memorial Chapel you will receive a warm welcome by members of the congregation and choir if you come to the crypt afterwards. You will find the steps down to the crypt in the little vestibule to the left of the Lord's Table from which the staircase also ascends to the gallery above.
